Lacrosse: Clutch goal caps historic win for Peters Township

Written by Joe Koch on

For a long time, Peters Township's boys lacrosse team has battled with vaunted section rival Mt. Lebanon, achieving little more than moral victories.

All of that changed on Friday night as Danny Bacchiochi hit a spinning shot from about 15 yards out with 2:41 left in the second overtime to give the Indians a 12-11 victory over the Blue Devils in the WPIAL Class 3A championship game at Robert Morris.

Bacchiochi was reveling in the moment: for both himself and his team.

"It's the first time in Peters history [to win a WPIAL boys lacrosse championship]," he said. "It feels pretty good. I knew someone had to make a play, and we were struggling to put the ball in the net. I pushed it top-side, spun back and shot it left-handed and hoped it would go in. I couldn't smile hard enough. It was great to just bring a WPIAL title back to Peters for once."

It was a heart-stopping game for the Indians' 28-year-old coach Mike Kaplan.

"I got pretty exhausted out there," said the grinning Kaplan. "I'm just exhausted, and I'm on the sideline. I told them at the end of the first overtime, please go out there and finish the game. My heart can't handle this. I'm 28, but this is extremely stressful stuff. I can't even imagine what was going through the players' minds throughout the entire game."

Now, Kaplan and his team must prepare for a 5:30 p.m. game Tuesday with District 3 runner-up Manheim Township at Hempfield High School.

Kaplan said the Blue Devils have owned the series between the two teams, but there was a seismic shift this season. Not only did the Indians win the WPIAL championship, they also won the regular-season game, 10-5.

Still, Kaplan was not in a gloating mood.

"[I give] a ton of credit to Mt. Lebanon," he said. "They never gave up. That's one of the best lacrosse games I've ever seen. Both teams were at it the entire time. [Mt. Lebanon] is probably one of my favorite teams to play against because it's always a game like this. Our record against them [overall] is not very good against them, but we're 2-0 against them this year. In the years past, it's very much in their favor. I have a ton of respect for their staff and their entire organization. Playing against them is always a blast."

The goal was Bacchiochi's only one of the game, but he had two assists. Plenty of his teammates decorated the scoresheet as Zach Casilli, Ben DelaneyColton Abateand Clayton Scott each scored two goals. Will DelaneyAidan Stopperich and Aidan McCall each added single tallies.

Early on, the Indians appeared set to make the evening a short one as they led Mt. Lebanon 5-1 after the first quarter.

Kaplan wasn't ready to make a dinner reservation. Instead, he gave his players a history lesson.

"I told [my players] at the end of the first quarter, we're playing Mt. Lebanon." he said. "They've been in [the WPIAL finals] a number of times. They are seasoned veterans, and you can't count them out. You have to have the same attitude for the rest of the game. Sure enough, Mt. Lebanon came out and said, 'Hey, we've been here before; we know what's up.' They took off and took us into double-overtime."

Moments after Bacchiochi's winning goal, Kaplan still wasn't certain it was over.

"With the way we were finishing all night, I was not 100 percent sure the ball was going into the net," he said. "We didn't actually think it went in until I heard the whistle and there were moments of disbelief. [Bacchiochi] asked for the ball quite a few times: 'I want the ball on my stick' and that's the kind of guy we expect to score those big goals there."

Kaplan knows he must prepare for the first-round PIAA playoff game, and he knows there's always talk about getting a team refocused for the statewide event.

He's just not sure that's the right approach, citing the historic significance of his team's victory.

"I don't know if the guys will ever come down from this," he said. "I hope they don't. From day one of fall ball, our goal was the WPIAL championship."

Goal one has been achieved. It's time now for some new goals.
